Designing a Domino Display

A small rectangular block used as a gaming object, typically one that is tipped over by another to cause a chain reaction. Dominoes are usually made of rigid material, such as wood, and may be decorated with pips (dots or spots) or other designs. They can also be constructed of ceramic clay or frosted glass for a more novel look. Dominoes are also known as bones, pieces, men, or stones.

In some games, dominoes are set up in a row with the leading edge on the left. This allows players to move around the edge of the dominoes without disturbing them. The goal is to reach the right edge before the opponent does, thus winning the game. The earliest known game of dominoes, called “Domino” or “Dominos” was developed in China in the 12th or 13th century. The earliest recognizable sets of dominoes were composed of ivory, silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell, or dark hardwood, with pips inlaid or painted white. Later, sets were produced in Europe in a variety of materials including bone and ebony. Some modern-day domino sets are molded from polymer resins, but most are handcrafted of a more natural material such as wood or bone.

Hevesh plans out her domino creations using a version of the engineering-design process. She starts by considering the theme or purpose of an installation and brainstorming images or words she might want to use. From there, she creates a diagram of the layout. Next, she tests each section of the display to make sure it works. She begins with the biggest 3-D sections and works her way down to the smaller flat arrangements. Finally, she adds the rest of the dominoes in the correct order to ensure the final product is perfect.

Creating a domino display requires careful planning and execution. In addition to being very visually appealing, the tracks must be perfectly aligned and spaced in the right distance from each other. A slight deviation in the track or a single domino falling out of place could ruin an entire setup. To ensure that her installations work properly, Hevesh makes test versions of each section of the display and films them in slow motion to see how the pieces work together.
