Singapore Prize Winners Announced at a Gala Ceremony
The winners of the Singapore Prize were celebrated at a gala ceremony at the Mediacorp Theatre on Friday. This year’s prize honours five individuals who have made remarkable contributions to society through their innovation and creativity in business, social enterprise and the arts. Guests were treated to performances by Bastille, OneRepublic and Bebe Rexha. The ceremony was hosted by Emmy Award winner Hannah Waddingham and three-time Emmy winning actor Sterling K. Brown, with guest appearances by Cate Blanchett, Lana Condor, Robert Irwin, Nomzamo Mbatha and Donnie Yen.
The top prize is a cash prize of 340,000 Singapore dollars (US$21,158) and the winner will also receive 16.5 Race to Dubai points. The winner will also be eligible for the standard Tour event-winning benefits such as a free entry into next year’s tournament, invitations to other special events and the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Trophy.
In addition, the winner will receive a bespoke swan-shaped award, which is custom designed by StoryTel. The runner-ups will each receive a hand-crafted trophy, a 12-month gift code for StoryTel and the opportunity to be interviewed by the media. This year, the prize has attracted writers across all four languages, including senior citizens Suratman Markasan and Wang Gungwu. Both are 91 years old and have won their first prize in the creative nonfiction category. They are also the oldest prize-winners in this category, with Markasan winning in Malay and Gungwu winning in English.
This year’s prize ceremony marked the return to a physical format, with winners being announced in 12 categories in Chinese, English, and Malay. This year’s winners included 43 writers, and more than half of them won their prize for the first time.
