Participants completed questionnaires (Gambling Questionnaire, GRCS, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and Illusion of Control) and a computerised contingency judgement task to probe the illusion of control in gambling. They then interacted with the simulated gambling app on their smartphone for an hour. The results showed that participants were able to engage in significant amounts of persistent gambling behaviour, even after being informed that they no longer had the opportunity to win money. This persistency was predicted by engagement with the app when there was a chance of winning and by the magnitude of the rewards being offered in the game.

The research on mobile gambling demonstrates the potential for this technology to influence problematic gambling behaviour and the way in which it is managed. It also raises questions about how existing responsible gambling interventions may be less efficacious with mobile gambling technologies and highlights the importance of further research to understand the effects of these emerging technologies on problem gambling behaviour.
