The HK Prize and Other Awards to Recognise the Best in Science and Technology in Hong Kong
In a bid to boost Hong Kong’s scientific research and innovation landscape, the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize has been established since 2022. Title-sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, the award aims to recognize outstanding scientific researchers/teams who have made remarkable achievements in their respective fields and are able to translate their research results into application and benefits for the society. The prize is also meant to inspire the local scientific research community to persist in innovation, establish themselves in Hong Kong, serve the nation and contribute to the world.
The prize was founded by Professor Wang Gungwu, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, with a donation of HK$100,000 (matched by the Government Matching Scheme in the Sixth Round). It was then named after the late Professor and his wish to sow the seeds of insatiable curiosity and resolute perseverance in young people, and encourage them to be intrepid and daring.
Every year, experts from Hong Kong and overseas are invited to select the winners based on their impressive scientific research achievement, as well as the innovative spirit and ability to commercialize their work. The award also reflects the Hong Kong community’s support and recognition for its excellent scientists.
Apart from the hk prize, there are various other awards to recognise the best in Hong Kong. For example, the Book Prize is awarded to the most innovative book in planning history published in English and related to the city/region where the IPHS international conference is held. It is open to books written individually or jointly. The winner will receive a certificate.
Moreover, the HK Prize has a wide range of categories and criteria for nominations. Those who wish to submit their application should visit the website for more information. The prize is a great opportunity for the winners to showcase their talent. They will not only win a sum of money, but they will also gain global recognition.

It is an ideal way to bring the scientific world into the mainstream of the public’s life, so that more people will be inspired and interested in science. The HK Prize will continue to be a valuable resource to promote Hong Kong’s development as a scientific and technological hub.
