The Hong Kong Prize 2023

The Hong Kong Prize is a contest that allows students to compete for the chance to win a prize fund of up to HK$100 million. It is open to all enrolled secondary school students in Hong Kong, and participants must be nominated by their teachers. The prize money can be used to support the student’s education, and it can also be donated to the winner’s school. In addition to the grand prize, there are a number of other awards and prizes that can be won by the top competitors.

The 2023 Hang Lung Mathematics Awards (HLMA) attracted the participation of over 70 teams from around 50 schools in the city. Under the supervision of a teacher, each team decided on a mathematics topic and designed and conducted research. Ultimately, the teams submitted research reports that were evaluated by a Scientific Committee.

During this year’s event, a prestigious panel of judges was appointed to select the winning entries and awardees. The jury was made up of a distinguished group of local scientists, including Professors FAN Zhiyong, Dennis Lo Yuk-ming and Joseph Sriyal Malik Peiris. The judging process was rigorous and comprehensive, with the judges examining and considering each entry carefully.

There were many impressive submissions, and it was difficult for the judges to select their favorites. In the end, the judges awarded the top five entries with their respective prizes. The Judges Prize, worth HK$4,000, was awarded to Kyan Cheung Ka-Hin and Ethan Soh Jon-Yi from Harrow International School Hong Kong for their artwork titled “On the Properties of the Semigroup Generated by the RL Fractional Integral”. The Public Vote Prize, worth HK$10,000, was awarded to Lui Chun Kwong from Diocesan Girls’ School for her painting titled “The Trembling Ground”.

The 2023 BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize (BOC STIP) was announced today at an awards ceremony organised by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. The event was hosted by Mr Adriel CHAN, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Hang Lung Properties, who also moderated a stimulating Fireside Chat featuring Dr Owen H. KO, 2004 HLMA winner and Assistant Dean (Research), Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Ms. Ewina PUN, 2012 HLMA winner and doctoral candidate at Brown University. The two HLMA winners shared their personal journeys and distinctive perspectives on the transformative power of mathematics and neuroscience. The BOC STIP is now entering its fourth year and aims to inspire young people to pursue a career in science. It is also intended to encourage the community and businesses to support science education.
