The Sidney Prize Celebrates the Best in Long-Form Journalism

In a time of short attention spans and clickbait headlines, long-form journalism and thought pieces remain effective ways to inform and engage. They may take longer to research and write than their shorter counterparts, but they can make an impact that goes beyond the initial publication. And that’s why Sydney Prize is here to celebrate the best in them.

Each year, numerous Sydney prizes are bestowed on individuals and organizations striving to improve the world. The Sydney Peace Prize honours leading global voices that promote peace with justice and nonviolence – past recipients include Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mary Robinson and Joseph Stiglitz – while the Sydney Literary Prizes recognise and reward outstanding writing across a range of genres.

The Hillman Foundation Sidney Prize is awarded monthly for socially conscious journalism that fosters social and economic justice. The prize is named after the late President of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA), Sidney Hillman, who established the Hillman Foundation in 1946.

Each month, Herald editors pick their favourite essays from those published online on our website – or in print in the Herald. Our judges are looking for originality, skill and insight that can engage a wide audience of readers. The winner will receive $1,000 — courtesy of Dymocks Books and Tutoring — plus spend a day in the Herald newsroom, and two runners-up will each win $500 and a 12-month digital subscription.

We also award the prestigious MAK Halliday Postgraduate Research Prize in recognition of an excellent piece of work by a postgraduate student within the department of Linguistics. The prize is funded by the Lucy Firth bequest.

The Sydney Morning Herald Essay Prize is open to all NSW residents aged below 24. Entrants must respond to the question ‘What makes you optimistic about the future of Sydney or NSW?’ Entries close Monday 2 October and will be judged by senior Herald editors, along with Tara June Winch.

All winners are presented with a mesmeric swirl Sydney Film Festival trophy designed and handmade in Sydney by Dinosaur Designs. They are also awarded with a certificate signed by the Festival Director.

*Subject to Terms and Conditions. The Prize is not transferable and cannot be redeemed for cash. By entering the competition, entrants agree to receive from Destination NSW communications with travel offers/tips about Sydney/the surrounding region unless they have opted-out or unsubscribed. Sydney Film Festival reserves the right to amend these terms and conditions without notice.
