Types of Bets in Roulette

Roullete

Roulette is one of the most popular casino games in the world. It’s easy enough for beginners to understand and offers a variety of betting options that can make it an exciting game for experienced players too. When you’re playing roulette it is important to know that different types of bets have varying odds and payouts. There are three main categories of roulette bets: inside bets, outside bets and announced bets.

The roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk slightly convex in shape. Around its circumference are thirty-six compartments painted alternately red and black and numbered non-consecutively from 1 to 36. On European wheels a 37th compartment, painted green, carries the number 0. There are also two green pockets on American wheels. Each spin of the roulette wheel is started by spinning a ball in one of these compartments.

When the roulette wheel is finished spinning, the croupier will drop the ball into one of the empty pockets. If the ball lands in a winning bet, players will receive their betting chips according to the amount they wagered. Inside bets are placed on specific numbers, groups of numbers or the colors red and black. Outside bets are placed on propositions such as high-low, odd-even or the first, second and third dozen.

While some people believe that roulette was invented by 17th-century French mathematician Blaise Pascal and by Dominican monks, the truth is that it was derived from older games such as hoca and portique. The roulette wheel and table layout as we now know them were developed in the early 18th century in France. Eventually, the game made its way up the Mississippi to New Orleans and into gambling dens in the US, where it spread quickly.

It wasn’t until 1843 that French siblings Louis and Francois Blanc introduced the single-zero pocket to the roulette wheel, drastically lowering its house edge. This allowed the game to gain huge popularity throughout Europe. The resulting game, now known as European roulette, is still the most popular variant today.

Announced bets are special betting combinations found mainly on French roulette, but sometimes present in other online European Roulette variations. Their name is derived from the fact that they are declared to the other players before they’re made, unlike other bets which are hidden from other players until they are settled.

Announcing your bets can help you win more often. This is especially true for bets on the numbers 0 and 1 and on red/black, high/low and odd/even. However, this strategy is not foolproof and should not be considered a sure-fire way to win. Nevertheless, it is a great way to increase your chances of winning and is definitely worth considering for those who want to improve their roulette game.
